My, what a tremendous tourist town this is. But then, it has been since the 1830's. If there is one place where you can find people that originate from different countries around the world, this has got to be it. The United Nations should shut down it's building in New York City and move here. It could certainly get enough representation from the approximately twelve million people that visit Niagara Falls each year.

Red Niagara Falls Niagara at Night - Niagara Falls, New York

We were fortunate to be here on the last day in summer that they set off nightly fireworks. The fireworks show started at 10:00 PM so we decided to find a spot on the tower on the U.S. side. We didn't know where they launched the fireworks from, but felt that the tower would provide a good view. We were able to get a spot along the rail on the tower before the big crowd arrived. By now it was dark and the American Falls was being illuminated in various colors of light. At 10:00 PM the illumination ceased and the fireworks began exploding directly across from the American Falls on the Canadian side.

Green Niagara Falls The American Falls in White and Green - Niagara Falls, New York

The fireworks show only lasted about five minute and while nice was not overly spectacular. Once it ended the illumination of the American Falls resumed. We and most of the rest of the crowd decided to stay on the tower and watch the changing colors on the American Falls. I had just taken this picture of the white and green falls when we were startled by a man's voice yelling "THE TOWER IS CLOSED! GET OFF NOW!". We turned around to find a man carrying a baseball bat and several uniformed men walking from the river end of the tower. We began a hasty retreat occasionally looking behind us to watch the man with the baseball bat walk up to people and yell in their face "THE TOWER IS CLOSED! LEAVE NOW!". It's no wonder that people from other countries think that all Americans are rude.

Maid of Mist The Maid of the Mist - Niagara Falls, New York

The next day we took a ride on the "Maid of the Mist". This is a boat the travels past the foot of the American Falls and then actually takes you into the center of the Horseshoe Falls. They are kind enough to provide you with plastic, hooded raincoats for the trip. The view from the boat is quite unique. However, once in the center of the Horseshoe Falls the mist is so great that it is difficult to see anything. If you plan on taking pictures from here I would recommend either a weatherproof camera or an underwater housing. After safely returning from our boat trip, we walked over to Goat Island and took a close-up look at the top of the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Horseshoe Falls before departing.
